Caster, I have a lot of hose and long lengths of it in my build as well, do you have any concerns with heat loss or anything thing else? This issue has been on the back of my mind for sometime now.

Kal, thanks. You have great detailed plans and very easy to follow. So far I have tried to replicate yours while trying to save a few bucks in the process. I think It comes close. I still need to brew with it, Very Soon I hope.

The hose is pretty thick and as long as your moving the fluid and using your HERMS, any heat loss should be negligible. Kal's system using the PID's and internal heating elements are designed to address this heat deviation issue and hold set temperatures, so you can concentrate on making great beer. Castermmt

When I installed my HERMS coil I used the stainless steel 90 degree tubing fittings. I was able to rotate half the coil almost to the bottom of the kettle over the heating element. The HERMS is now submerged in the water at much lower levels. We install the element at 3" and our bottom fitting install of the HERMS is about 1" above the element, so our lowest point of the coil would sit around 4" if we just use straight fittings . By being able to rotate the coil to near the bottom of the kettle we can submerge more of the coil to the heated water increasing the exposure of the heated water to more surface of the HERMS coil which could make the HERMS a little more efficient if water levels in your kettles drop below the coil level. this idea may or may not be useful, but its an idea, Castermmt

Well, I had a little of the Butcher block top left and needed to build a grain mill stand and decided what the hell, so I made a mini clone of my 10'4" brew stand. Just got done staining it. here are a few pictures. I have a bare bones "Schmidling Malt Mill" for around $100 delivered and a small motor I picked up at the local flea market for $10.
I plan on building a oak hopper using 1/2" oak plywood and staining it with the same "Gun Stock" stain. Should look sharp once its all done. Finished it up this week, here are the pictures.

Beautiful build, Castermmt. I'm having the same thought about a smaller version of Kal's design for additional work area and storage.

I've been working on my exhaust hood so here are some pictures. I'm using 1/2 inch sanded plywood, 2 x 6 inch pine boards and a thin plastic sheet product to line the inside. Here's where I'm at to date. I'll be working on it a little bit each day now that I'm on vacation next week.

I nailed it together using 1.25 inch brads and used water resistant wood glue. The plastic sheeting is fastened using construction adhesive (liquid nails).

Beautiful work Castermmt. We both seem to be designing our hoods and gain mill table to compliment kal's brew stand. Curious on how you will do the ducting to your hood. From the top or from the side? Also, how will you mount the hood?

I'm coming out of the top with a 8"x12" sq to a "90 degree" x 6 inch transition and will go straight out to the wall about 30 inches total run from top of hood to outside wall, also using a vortex type blower I got off fleabay for $110 delivered. I have 13 foot high ceiling so the hood will be hung using wire rope. I'll post more pictures along the way. I just put the first coat of stain on it, so I'm having a beer (or a few beers) while I wait to put on a second coat.

Well 3 beers I decided to put the second coat of stain. I think that will be it for tonight. I'll have to see how she looks in the morning.

Well I finally got the hood hung in place. Here are some pictures. I still need to locate and cut the hole for the duct and install the fan.

I got the exhaust blower hooked up. Still need to build a Switch box for the hood lights and fan speed contorl. thats this weekends job. Also pictures of a stainless steel sink I scored for free. Had to clean the sh*t out of it for 6 hours, it was covered in crud. It came out looking close to brand new.

I added a 3rd pump as a backup/spare this weekend and relocated the pump station directly center of the kettles and shortened the hose. Note that I have my pumps mounted on a drawer slide so I can pull them out while in use and less mess when hooking up hoses then when done I can slide them out of the way. .
