Noticed alot of BS posting lately. Especially in the Off Topic section. Non Brewing adverts, etc. Is it even possible to filter or ban these?

Unfortunately, no. Or not easily.
I have an advanced CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) by Google and use it during registration to try and limit bots from registering automatically. Automated SPAMMING software is getting more and more advanced however: If a bot cannot automatically register it creates a list of "places I couldn't get on" with the questions being asked so that the human spammer behind it all can go in and provide the necessary information to unblock the software. So the spammers let these programs run 24/7 and once and a while they pop in to see where they need to provide information to keep it running and registering on 1000's of forums worldwide.
The only good method (and what I do elsewhere on my other CurtPalm.com forum) is to have some moderators to simply nuke the posts and user accounts fairly soon after they post. Of course, I spend time nuking too. It's very annoying but about the only option that makes sense and with more than one person doing it it's rare that a post will last more than a few hours. Sometimes we get them within a few seconds.
The only other way is for me (or someone) to manually accept people registering before they can post for the first time. But that's annoying too - not only for me but for the person who wants to post since they may have to wait for me to accept their registration. It also only stops some since until someone posts, how am I supposed to know if they're going to spam or not?
If anyone has any other ideas I'm all ears!
Kal

Thanks Kal,
Thought that might be the answer. Just don't remember many of these issues on CurtPalme. Guess the moderator method is the way to go.
