Kal,
In the HLT, why did you put the temp probe in the 'T' connector outside the kettle and not in the kettle itself like you did the BK probe?
The only thing i can think of is you constantly have the water recirculating. But, what if you just wanted to heat the water up w/o the recirculating?

I hope I'm allowed to chime in...though I'm sure Kal will give you an "official" reply! Very Happy

Circulating the water ensures that it's pretty much the same temperature throughout. Without this, you'd get a temperature gradient, which would require multiple sensors to get an accurate reading. I don't have figures for the general case, but I've seen a difference of 6 degrees in my kettle.

If you have the blichmann's, you can always fall back on the built-in brewmometer, and defer circulating until you're close to the target temperature.

I'm also quite thankful it's like that, since it's one less frightening hole to drill! Twisted Evil

Makes sense. And I completely agree with that fear of drilling holes in a blichmann. Did my first one last night and my heart was pounding!

I was a wreck when I was drilling my cheap-o aluminum stock pot... might be worth the $35 to have Blichmann do it for you.. Wink

Crush said it perfectly. That's the exact reason. To avoid stratification you need to move the water.
